History and Background
Richardson Cemetery represents a unique glimpse at biracial burials
in the context of rural nineteenth century. The cemetery contains
various stylistic qualities relating to past Afro-American culture.
Although the black and white sections of Richardson Cemetery exist
side-by-side, fencing and curbing techniques in the white section
contrast significantly to the mounding and scraping practices that
dominate the black section's landscape. Most of the antebellum white
graves in the cemetery have distinctive Gothic pointed headstones.
