Nature Trails:

  • Allen Altivater Trail -2,960ft/30 minute walk. This trail takes you through the Pine Flatwoods area east of the main campground. The key point of the trail is to teach the importance of ecological burning.

  • Wild Orange Grove Trail -2,929ft/30 minute walk. Beginning behind the Hammock Inn, this trail blends pine flatwoods with bayhead and young hammock plant communities. Key points on the trail are the Wild Orange trees and their blossoms.

  • Alexander Blair Big Oak Trail -975ft/15 minute walk. The shortest of our nine trails hosts one of the largest trees in the park. The Big Oak is the key point of the trail. At more than 1,000 years old, this giant Live Oak measures 36 feet around the trunk of the tree.

  • Hickory Trail - 2,196ft/30 minute walk. Connecting with the Fern Garden Trail, this beautiful trail's key points include the Pignut Hickory trees and the catwalk, which starts from the Big Oak Trail.

  • Richard Lieber Memorial Trail - 1,791ft/25 minute walk. At the start of this trail, you'll find the 1,000 year old Live Oak known as the "oldest living thing in the hammock" according to the park history books. This is one of the three boardwalk trails in the park. This one goes through the hardwood swamp.

  • Young Hammock Trail - 2,954ft/30 minute walk. Fire's effect on nature is the key point of the young hammock trail. Its importance is taught to you with the help of the trail guides at the start of this trail. Succession from the pine flatwoods to a hammock community is evident on this trail.

  • Cypress Swamp Trail - 2,355ft/30 minute walk. Sometimes called "the catwalk," this is the most popular trail in the park. Numerous key points include the variety of plants, birds, and wildlife. The Charlie Bowlegs Creek runs through the west side of the park, and the boardwalk allows access through the natural community.

  • Ancient Hammock Trail - 3,005ft/35 minute walk. The longest trail takes you through the oldest section of the hammock. The large, wide variety of trees and plants, as well as Civilian Conservation Corps bridge are this trails key points. Be sure to stop and read "The Prayer of the Woods" located by the bridge.

  • Fern Garden Trail - 1,641ft/ 20 minute walk. Another boardwalk trail, this trail takes you though the hardwood swamp area. Chances are good you can find alligators on this trail. The key point of this trail would definitely be the female alligator who's been living there for years.
